My school uses the DRA II to assess student growth in reading. In order to pass most of the levels, students have to do an oral retell and a written retell once they get to levels above 2nd grade. To help my students do well with the retell, I teach summarization throughout the entire curriculum. We summarize vocabulary definitions in math, research articles in science, and even each other's stories when we share during writing.
I made this summarization sheet to go with my reading adoption, Houghton Mifflin Reading. There is a blank worksheet and a sample sheet filled out with information from The Ballad of Mulan.
