If you still have some students who are struggling with the Dolch word lists, try teaching the words phonetically.
I've made an anchor chart that groups the words by sound and have had great success breaking them down this way.
The light bulb goes on for some children when they hear and see rhyming words. It just seems to make better sense to them.
