Building a Classroom Community with Class Books

Do you like making and using class books as much as I do?  As you discuss book topics that are important to your students, like families, home, pets, and favorites, it's a great opportunity to find common ground and build community. Class books are a super way to incorporate conversation, writing, and drawing into your "getting to know you" activities at the beginning of the school year.  Plus, as you read and reread class books to your students, these books can be the core of the "readable books" that even your strugglers will be able to turn to with confidence for independent reading.

Here's a book about favorite t-shirts to get you started. It includes the cover you see, a template for student pages, and a related data collection activity. It might even be fun to combine this project with a "Favorite T-Shirt Day".

Happy Teaching!
