Before Common Core, I organized my literacy lessons by genre. I wanted my students to have a well-balanced diet of many types of books. I still find this practice useful so that I can teach the skills across genres.
After introducing the different genres to my students, I have them do this activity called a Classroom Library Sort. They locate titles and authors for each of the book types and record them on a form.
