I remember being taken aback at a training a couple years ago when the presented told us that we shouldn't be teaching kids the standard algorithm for adding and subtracting (you know, carrying the one or crossing out the tens) in 2nd grade. Whether we agreed or disagreed with the presenter,we all wondered how in the world were we
supposed to teach them adding and subtracting with regrouping?!?!
The presenter showed us a strategy called open number lines and I found it to be very effective with kids. Here are just a few open number line strategies:
