I
absolutely love teaching fraction and decimals. It is so fun to watch my fourth
graders examining the manipulatives, and working together to come to
conclusions. Working with manipulative and having visual models is important
for elementary students because the need to move from concrete representations
before moving to the abstract. That is why I let my students create Visual
Decimal Number Lines every year. My students like creating these number lines
and referring to them as we work on fractions and decimals. My student work
together in small groups to color each decimal from zero to one, using 10 x 10
grids. They cut and paste the grids onto 3-inch receipt paper. There is even a
small space under each grid for the students to label the decimals. Click here to get your FREE Create Your Own VisualDecimal Number Line.
