Students list one word that contains known roots, prefixes, or suffixes. The students add a word that shares one of the known word parts. The train continues by adding words with one shared word part. The goal is to create the longest train.
Students can work on this activity independently, in pairs, or in small groups. It is a great activity for a language center, homework, or whole group instruction when reviewing. Students can list definitions along with their matched words or definitions of the shared word part. It really helps students see shared meanings between words.
The Word Trains Vocabulary Game can be used with almost any aged students as long as they have a mental bank of common root and prefix definitions.
Happy Word Work!
