For reading month, my focus has really been on nonfiction texts. For some reason, I think it's easy to feel like "I meet the need" in nonfiction text through our textbooks, but that really isn't enough. So this month, I thought I'd try something new - current events!
I wanted my students to not only see what was happening in the real-world around them and read more nonfiction text, but I also wanted them to continue practicing summarizing. I created this current events organizer and pulled out the Time For Kids Magazines! After modeling for students how to do it, I then set them free to try it out on their own. I was very impressed!
You can read more about this activity here at my blog. There you will also find the free current events graphic organizer to download!
Happy Teaching!
