Mother's Day Writing Activity

I love activities that practice a skill and can double as something a student can give to a family member as a keepsake. We used C.S. Lewis' writing style as a jumping off point to create a description about a loved one for Mother's Day.

I used a passage from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but you can use any descriptive passage from a favorite author. Keep the basic frame of the passage and remove key words. Have the students replace the key words with their own.

The finished writing samples my students created gave me goosebumps. I was surprised how effective the mentor text was in helping my students create really meaningful writing samples.

Happy Mother's Day to all the teacher moms out there!
