Where Have All The Kites Gone? Is an easy reader involving simple subtraction.

Students trace the equations and solve the problems X-ing off kites as they go.
A sample page is pictured.

Discussion of what else could have happened to the kites can provide a writing prompt and nice transition to a different activity.
